Easter is such a special time in our house but it is something that is so hard to communicate to small children. Similar to the issues that we have around Christmas. How do we explain Santa and Jesus? How do we explain Easter Bunny and Jesus?
The biggest thing is to TALK about it! Easter is such a special time. It explains this amazing thing that Jesus did for us and that we worship a living God. So often, the Easter Bunny gets the most attention. We want to include him but in our family, we want to make sure that the main focus is Jesus.
So for us, the Easter Bunny started coming on Friday night so they can enjoy their baskets on Saturday. The main reason for doing this is so that Sunday is all about Jesus and not about a bunny that brought presents. Also, I work for a church so I like to enjoy seeing the joy in their faces when they get their Easter Baskets. Most Sundays, I am gone before they wake up and Easter Sunday I am gone even earlier. So….a little bit of a selfish reasoning too 🙂
He writes a note like THIS that explains the real meaning for Easter.
Our Easter Baskets are not packed full of things. Here are some ideas and hints for those baskets:
Start saving for their Easter Baskets right after Christmas. I spend MAX $25 on each basket. I look for when things come on sale and I find TONS of things for my daughter in the $1 section at Target.
Some suggestions:
1. Games – This is my favorite part of the Easter Basket. New games! Each one gets a new game and then we spend the rest of the weekend playing the games. Super practical and fun for the entire family!
2. Books – each kid will book on their level. We want to make reading fun and exciting so if they are included in these baskets, it makes it super fun!
3. Small Toy – I love the dollar store for this! Just something small and fun for them to open and play with. This year, our littles are getting a bug catcher! We will be out camping when they get their basket to so this is something they can instantly use!
4. Candy – this is my kiddos’ favorite part of the basket! The dollar store is another great place to pick up some bags of candy and split them up between the kids.
5. Practical / Theme Baskets – this year my kids are getting things to wear around our new property – hats, sunglasses, bug spray, etc. Something fun that they can also start using right away! This also helps keep toys and things to a minimum!
